Summary:
Danille Westerly has a successful career and a wonderful life that she is proud, unless her past comes haunting her..She couldn't contain when she came face to face with Michael De Cara the person behind all her misery..In spite of eighteen years  passing, her hatred only equaled her blind love once she felt for him..How would she come in terms with all that she put behind her head as he tries to pursue her to know the reason behind her utter hatred ,when he did what was best for her..How will they resolve their difference as they realise the spark to be alive ..By destiny she is given another chance to recreate her life with the same kind of life she lost, will she grab it and fill her life with love or decide against her heart..
Review:
This month has been promising in terms of my reading..I was skeptical participating in blog tours but luckily the books I chose surprised me totally, they all have been real good..This is another weekend read of mine and I am only too glad that I did..Breaking up the suspense of the hero's death  right in the beginning with the quotes " She was burying the man she loved and no amount of sympathy or prayer would comfort her today"
got me interested in reading , I knew at least they would get married which only meant there were no heart breaks, this only encouraged me to pursue my reading faster... Dani is successful, ambitious , so much control of  life yet with a melancholy of her past lingering her, on the other hand Michael is too much for a charmer, debonair to the core who has aged elegantly, a sensible businessman and a devoted father...I loved the chemistry between them, her loathing matched with his charm..Nightmares of a soldier is so amazingly written, most of the time we tend to take it for granted about, a soldier's war experience, but its a sad tale that we hardly realise that they need much love, care and trust even when they tend  to back away from it..I had  immense respect for the author for keeping the intimate scenes crisp yet sensual, because off late I was tired for reading to many details running to pages.. The book as the title suggests is the nostalgic account of the protagonist Danille Westerly...Its a romantic fiction with class..Sletton's writing is peppy , sunny and quite vivacious, its a great weekend book to sit and relax with, feel good about everything around you...This is the right book for a lazy cuddle only to break to enjoy the day from balco..It was perfect for me to read it listening to the pitter patter of rain on my window as the backdrop..

Excerpt
Miguel sat at the bar of a small, crowded saloon in Saigon. He was on a three-day pass and spent it trying to forget why he was in this country to begin with.
He ordered another drink and turned a quick glance at his friend Billy, who was sitting at a table near the door with a young Vietnamese girl. Billy was an oversized, clumsy farm boy from the Midwest who thought himself a charmer with the ladies. But he was also tough, honest and brave, good qualities a man needed in this place and a friend needed in a buddy. Miguel and he had stuck close since being sent to the same unit in Nam.
Smiling and shaking his head at his friend, Miguel turned back to his fresh drink and took a swig. Something brushed against his leg and he looked down from the tall barstool to see a small beggar boy, one arm missing, his face grotesquely disfigured, carrying a small bag looking up at him. Miguel just turned away from the boy and he continued on his way looking for handouts. Young children, deformed and missing limbs, were all over Saigon; one of the cruelties of this damn war. Miguel, like everyone else who had been there too long, had learned to look through them and past them since he was unable to help them all.
Once again Miguel glanced at his friend, now leaning forward head-to-head with the girl. He noticed the beggar boy stopping only a second at Billy's table, then being brushed away by Billy, the boy headed out the door into the daylight. Through the light from the door opening, Miguel noticed that the bag the boy had been carrying lay under Billy's table and it took him only a second to realize what was in it.
"Billy, bomb!" Miguel yelled as he jumped over the bar for protection in one smooth motion. Other military men in the bar took cover under tables and behind the bar. So engrossed in his new lady friend, Billy only looked up, confused by all the commotion before the realization of what was happening crossed his face. He pushed the girl away from the table, but before he could move an inch, the plastic, homemade bomb below him exploded. Miguel screamed his name as he watched his friend tear into pieces before his eyes.
 "Billy, no!"
Dani shot up in bed at the sound of a man screaming. Not even awake yet, she instinctively jumped out of bed and ran through the darkened apartment to the open sofa bed where Miguel was sleeping.
"Billy!" he screamed again, loud and anguished, and in the moonlight through the patio doors Dani could see the horror in Miguel's face.
Quickly she crawled into bed and held him tight, softly cooing, "Miguel, it's okay. You're home. You're safe. I'm here Miguel, I'm here." Over and over she said this until he finally stopped struggling and grew quiet in her arms.
Dani cradled his head on her chest, rocking him back and forth like a frightened child. Still assuring him he was okay, she was there for him. She ran her fingers through his damp hair, brushing it away from his face, rocking him gently, assuring him he was home and safe. And even as he came to his senses, Michael continued to let her hold him. She was the only woman who could soothe his pain of remembering. It felt warm and comforting to be in her arms, so easy to allow her to soothe and comfort him.
After a time, still holding him, Dani softly asked Miguel, "It was the bar dream again, wasn't it?" She knew all his bad dreams, the jungle dream, the bar dream, the body bag one, each in detail from when he had told her about them years ago. She was the only one he'd ever told them to, because she had been the only one who had ever cared to listen.
Miguel nodded his head in her arms. "I should have done something," he said hoarsely. "I should have saved Billy."
"You did the best you could," Dani said softly. "No one could control who lived and who died. You have nothing to blame yourself for."
Dani sat quietly for a while longer, still holding Miguel close. She thought of his pain, of her pain and of the pain they had caused each other. "We make a great pair, you and I," she whispered, shaking her head. And then, slowly, she lay down under the covers beside him, all the time holding him close, both finally falling asleep from exhaustion. And for the first time in years, Michael slept soundly and dreamlessly, feeling safe in Dani's arms.
Sunlight streamed through the patio doors across the sleeping bodies of Michael and Dani. He stirred slowly and carefully sat up, not wanting to disturb her sleep, and was surprised to see the clock on the opposite wall read 11:00 A.M. He hadn't slept this late on a Saturday morning in a very long time, and a smile played across his lips when he remembered the last time he had slept this late. And he had woken up with the same sweet woman beside him then, only a younger version. It was like they'd never parted.
As Michael studied Dani's sleeping face, he liked what he saw. In sleep she had the softness he remembered, not the look of bitterness she had shown him last night. He thought of last night and how she'd stroked his hair and soothed away his nightmare so tenderly. She was still the same sweet person he had known so many years ago, no matter how hard she'd tried to convince him otherwise. And she must still have some feelings for him other than hatred.
"Good morning," Dani interrupted his thoughts and looked up at him through sleepy eyes. "What are you staring at?"
"The past, the present, all rolled into one," he told her, smiling.

Summary:
Narrated by death, the novel is about Liesel meminger's life from childhood ,losing her brother on the way to her foster family...She discovers a book on the grave of her brother and there begins a vicious circle of her stealing books..The book is set during the Nazi  Germany with all its horrible state of affairs by Hitler's regime....
Review:
I put of the book at page one as death narrates the story, I didn't want this kind of read on a weekend but somehow picked it up..Trust me its an easy read in spite of dealing with a ghastly subject such as holocaust..
And I read on "Even death has heart"..
I was wondering what more can the author possibly write that would set the author different from what had been written earlier..But author doesn't really describe the holocaust straight but picks up characters weaves story around the protagonist Liesel Meminger, her observations, her thoughts and her experiences that in turn helps the reader paint a perfect snapshot of the Nazi atrocities..Death itself has different shades to offer, every death reflects a different colour and so does Liesel meminger's life..She loses her brother and is haunted by the death ever since, forced to live on a life with foster parents' she develops a warm relation with her foster dad Hans Huberman..He is a spirited man staying awake all night till Liesel is able to get back to sleep after her haunting dreams..He gifts Liesel used books on her birthday in exchange of his stock of cigarettes..He sends across a feeling of a wonderful teddy bear that a kid cuddles on..The important part is protagonist's love for words and the urge to learn ,like she puts it "I have hated words and I love them and I hope that I have made them right"...Her first book was grave digger's guide an accidental possession that she  holds on as a memorial of her brother's death..This becomes her defining part of personaity later stealing books in an organised way yet not being a ruthless thief, she does it all for the love of her reading..Uneducated for her age she forces herself into reading with the help of Hans Huberman her foster dad..The book is not only about suffering and dread but also celebration of courage, friendship and trust..Liesel finds a lasting friendhip and love in Rudy Steiner her neighhood boy with whom she grows up..It starts like a whip of cool breeze..He stands by her till the end until death parts them...
"A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship."
There were many characters apart from the protagonist who leave their mark, for instance Isa  Herman wife of the Mayor, she encourages Liesel to read and borrow books from her Library but she chooses to steal instead, Isa surprises Liesel by leaving a note letting her know that she would someday choose the door instead of window...Max Vandenurg is a Jew who hides at the Hubermans, he gifts her two books written by him, with their haunting dream from the past they are able to connect well..Rosa , Liesal's foster mother is rude and tough at the outset yet loves her with all motherly tenderness..Frau Holtxafpel Hubermans neighbour spits at their door every single day finally let go their family feud...The beauty of all these characters are that they are woven around Liesel adding extra layer of depth and persona to Liesal's...Death picks up Liesal's journal that she leaves in despair after finding her street and home is ruins...
This book is a melancholy saga with dashes of joy here and there..
So another new author for the reading challenge, its fifth..

Summary:
This book is a son's tribute to the woman who not only gave him life, but helped him live: through various psychotic breakdowns, tumultuous teenage years, and years of feeling out of place in the world.

Review:
Relationship between mother and her child is always a special., no matter what type it could be attributed to..Some lucky share a blissful one, others a marginal one some worse, yet this single relation in life is a defining one for good or for worse...This book is a haunting memoir I would say..Haunting because it raises several questions about the grey shades of life..It left me numb at certain places..I was moving around Phil's home sharing their boxes of discussions with tea along her mother Sophia, becoming a silent member when Phil describes his writings to her, at times pacing fast along Phil in urgency to find out what was going on in his mind...Freudian theory, some interpretations and a lot of philosophy runs through the book characterizing Phil...At places the writing creates a agonizing vibe within the reader when Phil talks fast, screams and feels miserable with his high powered hallucination , he is unable to get rid off..Sophia had a Himalayan task at her disposal .,coping with a difficult son, that Phil was with utter patience and a lot of love, I would say  unconditional love, that kept Phil from falling off  the edge...Phil doesn't literally praise his mother, but it is  evident in every simple act of hers , in every caress and cook of hers, every single meal that she prepared , every single conversation she held with her son...Though a lack of father figure, a hero left him with a void in him, Sophia walked beyond the horizon to help him out and figure out his life himself..
The book is not an absolute page turner nor there are interesting twisting plots, yet it stands apart with Phil's  simple and elegant portrayal of his mother... In Phil's word  she is "Love personified"..For anyone who reads would find this memoir to be heart rendering...After reading the book neither Phil nor Sophia linger around as two characters but as a single phrase with both embedded together.. Sophia's loving call Kiddo too stays on...The book went on to a perfect 5 on 5 in certain places but at certain place it lacked pace , may be that was what intended by the author so that the reader would take things slow ,relishing every word of it, making it a more lovely saga...The numbness in him is obvious after his mother's death and it is evident in his thought..
"Mother was dead but there was still food in her fridge. What do you do with a dead woman’s food? You don’t eat it. That is like eating death itself. I gave it all to the dogs."
I loved this the author's writing for his  pathetic honesty and portraying darker shades of human with ease....Good read stated this to be the most expectant debutante novel of the year and I have no doubt about it..

Note:
I received a copy of the book as a part of blog tour by novel publicity & co, however it has not affected my thoughts about the book in any way..These are my personal thought about the book..

Review:
Have you ever wondered what it would be like sprinting a marathon?? If not just read the book..This book is a sprinter from page one an absolute page turner...There are secrets to be kept and mysteries to be unlocked, lives to be saved and fight one's destiny...Life long feud between Clan O'Neil and that of Kelly's..Many a life is fallen apart by ruthless Paul at childhood that includes Rose Queen ...When I started reading my mind was prepared for a thriller now wait there comes romance okay so I thought it has romance oh no there comes some myths  and physical torturing and some childhood trauma by now my mind was used to expect the unexpected from the book. This book is a complete page turner..I developed a liking for Martin as much I felt a kind of detest..Martin goes through hell from childhood, knowing love only when he meets Rose a weird tattoo artist by call of destiny, on the other hand Paul is indifferent to any kind of human feelings even has he trains his son and hunting them others he exhibits a detachment to every act even as he kisses his son on forehead or when he takes of someones head or slit someone's throat oh did I just say all those things!! that is exactly all these actions are performed as a matter of fact....William is Martin's blood brother as he latter finds is a curious collector, whose curious leads him to all kind of trouble , the novel moves through his point of view, his knowledge in many fields keeps the gripped to the story all together..As you read through I felt nothing can be out of bound as far as this book is concerned..Reading through the book made me to research on the history of  many of the things described in the book for instance Antropodermic bibliopegy (book made of human skin) I won't spoil the fun by pointing out the others. All characters are wonderfully depicted distinct in their charcater portrayal, Paul by selfishness, arrogance and pride, Martin by courage, trust, compassion., Rose with her weirdness, craziness, love ,lust and  skill while William is all curious to his talent, enthusiastic  learner, ardent friend and brother...The book of Paul is an absolute complete page turner, in that aspect this book did a wonderful job letting me enjoy further reading...The language is crisp, easy and flowing..The chapters are short letting the reader sink into each part of web the author weaves very comfortable..The author is able to hold on the mystery as long as he wishes , spilling the beans at his pace ..Only thing I would have loved to read more on mystical connections between Hermes Trismegistus in ancient Egypt, Sophia, the female counterpart of Christ, and the Celtic druids of Clan Kelly, I guess that would be in next book perhaps...Omen, Tarot cards, mystery, murder, tortured angel, cold blood murder, pain, endurance, lust, love, trust, betrayal, science, myth now what more can the reader ask in a single novel..This has a bit of everyting not one in particular that is the unique part of the novel...  and needless to say this is an amazing start for seven volume sequel..

Summary:
Fianna witness a murder and is hunted by the killer..Running for life she falls, while her hope for survival is fades away, a stranger a boy of almost her age saves her..He disappears in a swish just the way he appeared..Eight years  later they confronted each other by the twists of fate..Fianna is intrigued by the indifference of the stranger she has been waiting all her life..Stuck in Manor house with the killer after her, will Gareth (stranger) and Fianna solve the mystery thereby discovering their lost charm??
Review:
Set up in a countryside with a murder mystery, romance yet to be unraveled a twist here and there, best part the author gives all of these right in the beginning  ... What more you need to get you reading ..Of course those were my initial thoughts...The prologue got me glued to the book ..I couldn't wait to know about Fianna's savior and  the love of her life...But the stranger unexpectantly turns out to be in the very same house Fianna is forced to live while their old connection seemed distorted much to the agony of Fianna...In spite of eight years she makes no mistake in recognizing those eyes...Fianna seemed silly heading to the forbidden forest time and again..I love author's play of letting out clues in bits and pieces..But the whole plot was spoiled for me when I figured out, that Fianna and Gareth were hunting for the wrong person..Another disappointment was the Fianna Gareth intimate plots..Man that ran to pages... I felt they could have been edited and skimmed..I liked the love hate relation of Fianna and Gareth , when I almost feel that everything set on a smooth ride ahead of them something drives them apart...The tour around Manor house was amazing for me with its strange people around, the ghostly aura gigantic windows and paintings...The whole writing paints an age gone by effortlessly...The way Fianna's mother leaving her children in manor house without leaving a message was so not like her character, yet it added to the mystery of the book...All in all "Heart of the hunter" is  a breezy read that takes you high right in the beginning...

Summary:
Che's scriptae of the Cuban revolutionary war as he lived it...From few dedicated soldier to become the Rebel army that overthrew Batista's regime..International icon and a pioneer of guerrilla warfare , it is first hand account of the troop..
Review:
I started to take notice of Che Guevara for his face used to pop out from many of my friend's T-shirt..I found the style interesting his eyes penetrating and dark hence I developed a liking for this man not knowing about his contribution to the Cuban history..Then I was fascinated about him through history teacher then finally started to read this when I was in college...
To start with I loved this book...I also loved Rambo series as a kid, I was wondering that a hero who was doing his job for the money offered to him and people went gag over it..And as you read you'll realize there were true men who actually went beyond heroism for a great cause they believed in and for common men...The book has two parts., Part 1 consists of group of men in the process of forming an organised Rebel army that threw the dictatorship of Batista...Che Guevara known as Che was an Argentinean still fought for Cubans and towards the end of the book he refers himself as a Cuban and this is the main point that sets him apart as an international icon...Che a physician had to choose between his devotion to medicine and duty as a revolutionary soldier right in the beginning ..He quotes
"There, at my feet was a backpack full of medicine and box of ammunition."
We all know what he chose!!!Many times he faces death sometimes wounded at times with no weapon , still he is able to think calm to think about death as a situation in hand that he wanted to face it dignified..Once he thinks about a story about Old Jack dying in Alaskan ice.. Now that really takes real grit to think about something like that rather than freaking out...He names every comrade who fought with him and the ones that he doesn't recollect are given in bracket, that shows a true leader who acknowledges every en devour of his fellow men no matter who small the contribution might me..There are also names of comrades or local villagers who betrayed the Rebel for money and military rank in the government lead troop..Those traitors are also given a decent death one that to my mind is Eutimo who is buried with a cross on his grave and his children being taken care of by the schools run by them...I was amused the way Fidel fakes as a high ranked soldier to one of the drunken foreman taking over the troop and refilling their stock of ammunition and weapons..The book is overloaded with hand granite, dynamites, Thompson machine guns..Che doesn't feel any inhibitions in portraying the rebel troops bravery devoid of any heroic adjectives..The troop risked their lives at many instances like this when all their hand granite and stick dynamites failed to denonate they never hesitated to set the whole place to fire...
Fidel is a role model and morale booster of the troop his order was to provide all possible medical aide to wounded prisoner who belonged to the enemy group..Che believes this is one of the important reasons in the victory of the Rebel troop..Most often the troop is left with less weapon than men still sheer bravery must have kept them going.. Even when the troops morale sinks Fidel would pour in fresh energy with his motivating speech..The way the troop with soldiers of many facets who could recruit soldiers, communicate effectively with the peasants building a strong rebel army by two years..I was completely admiring for the clear thoughts Fidel had for his troop according to him there were three crimes that were punished by death namely insubordination, desertion and defeatism...Many assassination plots are described just a matter of fact notes..One of it Che gives credit to him by the following..
"The whole night , the fate of the Cuban revolution depended , in large measure, on the twists and turns of a man';s mind, on a balance of courage and fear and perhaps on conscience on a traitor's lust for power and wealth"(page35)
As I found my pace of reading ebbing away due to many facts names and dates the chapter battle of
E.L Hombrito gathered up the lost pace..By the end of part 1 there are many photographs of Che and Fidel Castro along with their Rebel army with few signature style photographs of Che,..His love for puppies is well clicked in a photograph were he is photographed with a puppy in his arms..Every word of the chapter "A sin of the revolution" is a must read..For anyone who is not interested into reading about the whole book this single chapter will get the fair feel of the whole book....His writing is simple inspite of being a pool of many facts dates and places I wasn't put off at any point.....It might be even because of my admiration for Che..I found it a compelling read, yet I wouldn't recommend it all , only to serious readers who love to read about a icon and about an era that gave birth to a revolution and go down as a turning point in Latin American countries...To read about Che before becoming a revolutionary check on The motorcycle diaries, for review click here....
