Summary:
It is 1946 end of WWR II, Julie Aston decides to take a break from her otherwise war related columns and articles but then is not finding a subject to write a book, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey , their love of reading and books leads them to write often, he reveals about The Guernsey and Potato Pie society...Further letters lets Juliet see through the extraordinary lives of people in the island that changes  Juliet for good...

Review:
Julie Aston is out of ideas, she has no cue to built a story, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams a resident of Guernsey , an island on the English Channel between France and Britain..He is a pig farmer who has a book by Charles lamb once owned by Juliet, he writes to her , their common interest and love for books and reading leads to exchange of letters , thus developing a constant correspondence...She discovers that he is a member of Guernsey and potato Peel Pie Society, she is intrigued by it, her curiosity gets over her she sets on to learn the history of the society..It was born to keep a  pig  roast party a secret from the Germans...

She gets her idea to write she learns   more about the people and  the lives before and after the German invasion... Children were departed to England as  soon as the invasion, the island was largely isolated as people started to flee and there was a concentration camp set in the island for the slave laborer..She takes a step further to know other members of the society and slowly starts to paint a full picture of the state of affairs during the German occupation...She also learns about Elizebeth McKenna the founder of the society..She starts to write all this in her column...

Written in letter format, the style is astounding, Julia's growing love for the people in Guernsey, their tradition, culture and lives grows into the reader too...You can't help but love Elizebeth, she is courageous and heroic..Shaffer has brilliantly portrayed all about the second world war, and the heroic aspect of Elizebeth is picture perfect...She is a wow factor of the book..In spite of this amusing name of the society, it deals with some serious issues, it helps people to cope up with the hard times of the war through reading and interaction with other members of the society..Every member's recollection of how it helped them to get over it and move on was amazing..There are people who get different ideas reading books and the discussions were too beautiful....The book also explores Juliet's life and  her friends who help her whenever need arise...

The novel also explores the importance of love, care and affection during the hard times...The book is not just about the misery and the dark period  of the war, but how one can overcome all of it by sheer force of love , understanding and helping each other..In spite of reading the horrendous times of the war , the later part of novel part highlights moving on with charm, hence the distressing feeling melts way as the book closes, this  made me to love the novel even more....The book club help them to come alive, at times they are caught while returning home during curfew, still nobody miss the sessions and discussions.. Shortly after war Dawsey  develops a love for Lamb's work and that is how he writes to Juliet...All in all its an amazing book on WWR II and overcoming obstacles..Its sad that Marry Ann Shaffer did not live to see the success of the book, this book was completed by her niece Annie Barrows...It is also sad that we didn't get to read more of her work...

Summary:
From backcover:
The Taliban have disappeared from Kabul's streets, but the long shadows of their brutal regime remain. In his short life eleven-year-old Fawad has known more grief than most: his father and brother have been killed, his sister has been abducted, and Fawad and his mother, Mariya, must rely on the charity of family to eke out a hand-to-mouth existence.
Then Mariya finds a position as housekeeper for a charismatic western woman, Georgie, and Fawad dares to hope for an end to their struggle. He soon discovers that his beloved Georgie is caught up in a dangerous love affair with the powerful Afghan warlord Haji Khan, a legendary name on the streets of Kabul. At first resentful of Haji Khan's presence, Fawad learns that love can move a man to act in surprising ways, and an overwhelming act of generosity persuades him of the warlord's good intentions.
But even a man as influential as Haji Khan can't protect Fawad from the next tragedy to blight his young life, a tragedy so devastating that it threatens to destroy the one thing Fawad thought he could never lose: his love for his country.
Review:
Afghanistan being  in much trouble for many years has been a topic of journalist turned writers, for fiction and non-fiction alike and all of them have a shared  shade of melancholy drawn all  through it..
Fawad (do read the epilogue of why author chose this name) eleven year old boy has lost all in his family except his mother by the atrocities of Taliban reign.. Living on charity of his relatives his life revolves into hand to mouth state in a shattered home..Still he grows up into an intelligent, strong, brave boy with a fling of  optimism  with  dreams and hopes for a better tomorrow..Meanwhile his mother Mariya is offered a job as a housekeeper at Georgie's house..Along Georgie we are introduced to two other friends James an engineer and May an engineer with whom Georgie shares her house..Then on the story kick starts with Fawad developing a big time crush on Georgie who is intelligent, well read and caring..To Fawad's utter dismay Georgie is involved with Haji Khan an Afghan warlord...He can only watch helplessly as the relation blossom...But soon things threaten to fall apart...

I loved the way  Busfiled handled the plot ,the characters are so lovable, she has made it her point to make all the characters memorable just as that of the protagonist's, from Jamilla to Spandi -Fawad's playmates to James , May all stay deep in....Fawad who is introduced as a young boy, with nothing around to hold on to, his journey to being a young man with all the internal conflicts that of  love , hate, distress and loss are portrayed well that you can't help but wish him well..Haji Khan epitomizes the darker part of the Taliban regime...The relation of Haji and Georgie goes through without much drama and fan fare giving the right picture with right dimension to the reader...All along the novel Bursfield's love for the country its culture and people pumps up...The human spirit at the hands of hard times and pressure, kinship , love and zeal to lead along are all portrayed without being preached..Bursfield has stayed away from making any political statements yet her stand comes clear and vivid through various situations Fawad comes face to face...Fawad comes to learn many things from alcohol to sex through the three foreigners..For him they a window to the world outside his.. Even through the hard times Fawd keeps his wit and humour alive..I loved the way Fawad played the role of matchmaker for his mother and the blind shopkeeper was a real treat to read along...

I loved the book for the beauty of the language and the style to portray a distressed life that could be changed  by way of perception..

Review:
In spite of the partition rift all over the country, Mano Majra seems to be aloof from all of it..Muslims,Hindus and Sikhs still live in harmony..On the banks of Sutlej and the border village of Indo-Pak, it seems to be a strange exception to the events ..Like all good things are short lived, a train makes it entry to the village   throwing away the peace and tranquility of the place forever...

Hukum Chand, Juggut Singh and Iqbal are the prime characters of the novel..Hukum Singh is the village magistrate who has his share of shrewdness yet not being vile, Juggust is kind of a local gangster well built and often imprisoned for petty crimes, while Iqbal a communist social worker travels the rural area in the hope of  bringing up an uprising.. Juggut Singh is in love with Nooran the local Mullah's daughter..Ram Lal is killed by local dacoit gang but Juggut is  arrested as a suspect and put along , Iqbal..While Iqbal's thoughts and ideologies are influenced by his education he had abroad goes through his turns of slow transformation, while Juggust realises that he can never lead a normal life in his village with the kind of persona he has been carried..Both their mental thoughts weave a larger thoughts extending far exploring more human vantage of social and religious state of post Independent India....

The echoism created by the brutual actions of people belonging to all religion upon each other that ruined the harmonious state of the country in many ways is put bluntly in all its rawness.. While the murder of Ram Lal the village's money lender by the dacoit marks the beginning of problems the real booster is the train that  carries bodies of the dead Sikhs turns the village into a war ground between that of  Muslim-Sikh chain events that propels various turns in the novel..The three characters come together during the testing time that serve as an acid test for their  faith, integrity and tolerance for other community, culture and religion...

The book ironically portrays the evil that India's partition created ..In spite of winning the freedom the country put at stake things that should have been clearly avoided on amicable means whose consequence is felt even today among both the countries living as arch rivals...Nobody is blamed in the book but it explores on how innocent people's lives were thrown apart without no reason..Keeping that in mind Singh made the magistrate to order  the village Muslims to leave India is as a disturbing one that makes one think on how people of that time would have felt leaving their home and place  like refugees for the fear of life one fine day...What I liked was Singh has tried to bring the local pulse during the partition... People  were subjected to n number of trauma for  no faults of theirs blood massacre is all through in terms of  rape, murder and loot..The haunting memories are brought alive with Singh's detailing..Juggut's dialogue make a mark most of the times..Plot is played  to derail the train that carries Muslim to Pakistan , Chand overhears it and let Juggut and Iqbal to rescue the people but Juggut is passed out..The end is quite dramatic and the name of the person who saves so many lives at the cost of his own is not revealed..

Religious conflicts, personal gain, social reforms are the points that Singh has tried to scout through his novel...You will be not be completely mesmerized by Singh's writing, yet the book proves to be a mentally spurring one that will make you think on many things about those hard times.

Summary
Spiritual journey through words of wisdom that lead a boy to stand as a leader of his land leading them to shelter and safety..Feather floating in water -Feather has nothing but his grandmother's initial guidance to follow his dreams and his own spirit to help him through..

Review
Novel revolves around native American's life through a touch of spiritual wisdom...When the novel opens up Feather floating in water is eight winter old, he is a gifted boy who has dreams of visions he is yet to decode, his grandmother, Bright sun flower is already into the spiritual thought process, hence understands him and helps him time and again to clear of his troubled dreams..She teaches early how things are interconnected taking examples through the famous food web .. Feather grows up as a free spirited young lad filled with life in the warmth of his family...Like any other kid he loves to listen to stories , he never gets tired of listening to them..He carries legacy in his blood , his great grandfather from whom he has inherited his name also had visions and dreams..He was a true leader who led his people away from danger settling them down by the sea shore and thus called The Fish people...Slowly and steadily his grandmother instills in him to believe in his abilities, his visions, through everyday examples laying a strong foundation on how to connect his visions and there by acting upon them..He is given all fed very early in life because he is the one destined for it, save his people from the hard times, making them believe in his visions and  leading for a better tomorrow , but by then he is just nine winters old ,how can a young boy lead his people.. How can he overcome obstacles  to open up  to his spirit that would lead the way..He has not much time left when his land is invaded and his people at grave danger...

Native American culture is so beautifully described in a profound traditional set up, yet I felt there could have been more information about it...The layers of wisdom shed through them effectively, timely deeply wrapped through simple thoughts and ideas..The characters warmed me up with their way of life, the lessons are through simple events around us..
"Why do flowers not bloom in the cold season? Why are there hills and valleys?" He stopped long enough to hand her a stone. "What makes some stones different in color from others?"
and then follows the answers...
Author has kept the native touch through the characters vividly.. They play diving eagles, take cue from the sun's shimmer and glow, go by the season, live as a closely knit clan helping each other, leading a free spirited life indeed...Author has an introduction page where reference to the characters might be found..Though the novel itself is self explanatory yet readers might get an idea just in case...Fish people live so close to nature with everyday scenery unfolding to its fullest, eagles calling, starlit night to dusk and dawn that I wanted to get immerse in them...I  loved Chases butterflies, Feather's cousin who stands by him believing in him  rendering courage and support whenever his spirit ebbs away..
All through the novel the freshness of damp soil, scent of freshly bloomed flowers, canyons, rustling sea, broad horizons paint a colourful picture encapsulating in the wonder of nature ..The end was truly in Alchemist style only difference being that here, ancient People guide him through visions to a secret place helping him and his people..I highly recommend this book to everyone, even to those  who are not interested in spirituality a read for the native American touch, ..

About the author

Author of Circles, Spirals and Courage Through Fear, a short story in a book called Evolution Book 1 Put out by my publishing Company, Evolved Publishing.

Life is a wondrous mystery that I still explore. I spent my youth "feeling" my way thought it. I traveled throughout the seventies, standing on one highway ramp or another, exploring the many corridors of our country, learning about life and what it had to offer.

In 1979, deep in winter, I settled down. I was lucky enough to become the first woman journeyman pressman of a major newspaper in Colorado. After ten years of working on printing presses, an injury forced me down another path.

I made and sold jewelry, cared (still do) for abandoned animals, volunteered for a horse rescue as well as a no kill shelter. I went to school for so many different careers that ended up combining my credits to get a degree in horticulture. Unfortunately, or so I thought back then, two car accidents during my last semester, my last class, prevented my pursuing it as a living.

I had no idea what my future held, but I was fortunate; my caring and understanding husband allowed me to explore other paths and I found one I knew I belong on--writing.

Back then, I had no idea "someone" was pushing me to become a writer.

I had taken creative writing classes off and on throughout my college years, because I always felt the need to write. Nothing came of it, except satisfying my own desires, until that special dream guided me to write my novel, Circles.

I joined a couple writing groups to improve my skills. I met David Lane (aka Lane Diamond), my editor, in a group. He taught me to keep going, not to get discouraged, to write and never give up. He stuck with me and gave me the confidence I needed in myself, to let go of doubt, to move forward.

My animals taught me about myself through their own lives. They showed me that I had the patience to push onward toward my destiny, that to give up meant the end. They helped me learn that if I willed myself to wade through all the murky waters, eventuality, I would see clearly enough to move forward.

I am currently working on Stones, the third in this series and a book of short stories of the paranormal that will have something for everyone even if you are not sure you believe. I might just change your mind!

My mixed bloodlines have shown me many things in life that I am truly grateful for. Thank you, Great Mystery, for the dreams, for the guidance, for the whispers in my mind.

Excerpt

The beginning of change....
Feather Floating In Water woke shivering in the warm lodge. Dreams like this haunted him more as he became older, but this one—so real—made him jump up from the sleeping robe he shared with his grandmother. Screams and shouts of people running from burnt lodges still tortured his mind. Their confused expressions! And the fires, so real, had warmed his face.
How is it that dream flames can burn my face?
He sat up in the dim light and peered toward the top of the lodge, where Father Sun peeked through the flap that allowed smoke to escape. Sunrise. I am home and I am safe.
Bright Sun Flower stirred beside him. She must have heard him, probably felt his every movement. "Grandmother," he whispered, "I hear mother and grandfather sleeping. I need a walk, by myself. I will not go far, just to my favorite ridge."
"What troubles you, little one?" She too whispered, as she broke small sticks and tossed them into the low burning embers of the lodge's fire pit.
Flames from the freshly fueled fire brightened the lodge. Bright Sun Flower reached for her thick robe, dense with the hair of the hump-backed animal that thundered across the lands. She wrapped it around the dress she had managed to slip on before the lodge's fire came to life.
"I... I need to be alone."
"You are but eight winters old. Let me go with you, so your mother will not worry when she wakes."
Most nights, after his grandfather had rolled over to sleep, Feather made his way from his mother's robes to his grandmother's. His mother's rhythmic, soft snores never changed. She seldom stirred, sleeping the peaceful nights of one not plagued by dreams.
Like him, his grandmother had dream visions, maybe the same ones. After one such bad dream, Bright Sun Flower had taken him out to wander the canyons to help him clear his mind. She had told him her dreams showed that he had a destiny, an important one. They had talked and walked until he relaxed enough to laugh and dance around her again.
She had also told him she once held great Power, but gave it up to have a family. Now that her moon times were no more, her Power had returned. Feather, like all of the children, was part of everything that went on in the band. No one kept secrets from the next generation, and he understood moon times... as much as any male could.
What did all this mean—this destiny? Feather leaned up on his knees and watched her add a few more sticks to the hungry fire. Sweat beaded on his forehead and he caught her staring his way when he wiped it with the back of his hand. He wrapped his own robe around himself and crawled past his mother toward the lodge's flap.
"Too young for so many worry lines, Grandson. We should go talk about what bothers you."

Summary:
1867 . . . Southern lawyer and Civil War veteran, Reed Jackson, returns to his family’s plantation in a wheelchair. His father deems him unfit, and deeds the Jackson holdings, including his intended bride, to a younger brother. Angry and bitter, Reed moves west to Fenton, Missouri, home to a cousin with a successful business, intending to start over.Belle Richards, a dirt poor farm girl aching to learn how to read, cleans, cooks and holds together her family’s meager property. A violent brother and a drunken father plot to marry her off, and gain a new horse in the bargain. But Belle’s got other plans, and risks her life to reach them...Reed is captivated by Belle from their first meeting, but wheelchair bound, is unable to protect her from violence. Bleak times will challenge Reed and Belle's courage and dreams as they forge a new beginning from the ashes of war and ignorance.

Review:
The novel opens with Reed Jackson's sour spirit and a contagious aura of despair..Slowly I realised that he has every reason to feel dejected, he has lost his leg in the civil war, considered as no good nothing by his father, worse he not only loses his family inheritance but also his bride-to be to his younger brother...Worn out and utterly disappointed he moves to Fenton, Missouri to gather up the pieces and start all over again in the wild part of the country ..But he is quite taken aback by the warmth of his cousin and his wife right from day one...He starts his life at his cousin's hotel The Ames hotel..His cousin Henry and his wife Mary Allen come across as a wonderful couple , understanding about Reed's mood, they take every care to keep up his spirit light...They are quite friendly with the negro staffs dine with them and share a wonderful relationship with them...War had a terrible effect on Reed , he loses his older brother, his leg and everything around that took his life from being normal...Thus he contemplates

"His thoughts of family were as muddy and murky as the bayou, filled with pride, resentment and the undeniable knowledge that he may have done the same things under the same circumstances. Maybe, just maybe, his mother’s encouragement to begin a new life elsewhere came from the heart. And maybe she was right. He had best try and forget the hurts and the wrongs of the past and make something of himself in a new land..."

Enter Belle hardworking, family bound, earnest and loving daughter and sister whose feelings are never taken into consideration by her family, she washes her father and brother’s clothes, cooks the meals, tends the garden and manages to keep their meager farm operating. But nothing was enough, she was treated like a dirt by her father and brother, her brother has plans to marry her off as a part of bargain, in exchange of money to buy a horse...Belle is on the edge of life ,until she meets Reed, she discovers a spark in him that some way ignites her path of darkness, in spite of his physical disadvantage she sees him as a complete man...
Slowly as the silent relation progress there is stark and clear change in the stone man Reed.. His layers of complexities unravel exposing his true self of a kind and a warm person..He is drawn to Belle but holds back because of his physical state..He is cripple and how can he think of saving the girl from her trouble, but he also knows that she is the sole hope for a life with love...How can Belle collapse the wall that Reed has built for himself and free herself from her brother's iron fist trying to cage her...
Starting as a melancholy man, Reed's personality was something I really liked among all...
The result of civil war with freedom to Negros taking roots is written well...Their lives their good, not so good, and bad relationship with their white masters and employees are portrayed well..Set in an age where things are moving towards a life of equality Bush has set the stage just fine for reflection...The soft charm of the countryside with heroism and villainy is the best part of the novel...Prejudice, hope, loss, anger, despair, anguish love are all mood of the book in different stage in different proportions...I would definitely love to read more of the author's work...

Summary:
From the back cover
The setting is Tonkin (northern Vietnam) at the turn of the 20th century. A boy, Tai, witnesses the beheading of his father, a notorious bandit, and sets out to recover his head and then to find the man who betrayed his father to the authorities. On this quest, Tai's entire world will shift. Flesh takes the reader into dark and delightful places in the human condition, places where allies are not always your friends, true love hurts, and your worst enemy may bring you the most comfort. In that emotionally harrowing world, Tai must learn to deal with new responsibilities in his life while at the same time acknowledge his bond, and his resemblance, to a man he barely knew-his father. Through this story of revenge is woven a another story, one of love, but love purchased with the blood of murders Tai commits. A coming-of-age story, but also a love story, the sensuality of the author's writing style belies the sometimes brutal world he depicts.

Review:
The novel opens up with a scene of execution like the ones stripped off from the pages of history were the culprits are beheaded..A young boy Tai the protagonist witnesses his father's last moment by his great granduncle, and he has a sense of admiration for his father's bravery even during his last moment and yes Tai goes after his father's skull,he acts acts weird at atimes yet there is something fierce about him..Tai's life is clouded by sorrow and resentment, he runs away from his home away from his mother with a single ambition to bring back his father's head..He is forced to grow up faster than his age, he struggles to live up to the expectation to hold up the family honor and finally lay his father to rest, his only companion is his determination growing hard and sound....The story is a boy's quest to find the man who took away his father from him, even when he hardly knew about his father....A sense of melancholy lingers all along the novel..Tai works hard to to earn money to support his mother back home and to pay of the debts...Another character that comes clearly apart from Tai is that of Xiaoli's...

The plot moves slow and unfolds slowly , it took some time to get the hang of it..The novel explores Vietnam not the one usually comes across during the war but the one in its native form , fresh and raw...The local slang, the cuisine (don't miss out the snake delicacy) every bit of the story is a refreshing read..But I would admit that at places I was too detached from the plot .. Kanh Ha impressed me with his lyrical prose at places..Kanh ha's writing could invoke the mystic fragrance of jungle , sense of fear, apprehension, sorrow and dash of happiness, still it didn't help me to get over the boredom in the few pages ...The landscape of Vietnam in the 90's  is a treat to mind...All in all the book is a unique work of historic fiction...

Summary:
Sarah Prine, a woman of spirit and fire who forges a full remarkable existence on a harsh, unfamiliar frontier.Scrupulously recording her steps down the path Providence has set her upon- from child to determined young adult to loving mother - she shares the turbulent events, both joyous and tragic, that molded her, and recalls the enduring love with cavalry officer Jack Elliot that gave her strength and purpose...

Review:
Set in towards the end of 19th century the novel is the journal entry of Sarah Prine spanning  for about 20 years...The journal entry begins at the age of seventeen with the start of her journey from New Mexico to Texas by wagon..Tragedy strikes early and hard upon her and the family, her younger brother is killed by a snake bite while her father is killed by the Indian attack...Early events in her life shapes her character..Rather becoming a soul struck by fear., she grows up into a headstrong girl with a high survival instinct that is the reason the zest for life makes her through the going..Early in the novel she showcases her strength while saving her Lawrence girls from Indians and others....Savanaah Lawrence Sarah's sister-in law teaches her to read and write so the self taught Sarah slowly goes up the ladder  into a girl who can read and write fluently...The early journal entry has many grammatical and word errors but it slowly evolves into a poetic prose with lyrical notes..Her family decides to move to San Angelo to raise horses but they are only glad to be alive..Albert and Ernest her older brothers on whom the family responsibility reside decide to move back to Arizona which is almost equivalent to square one, there she feels at home ..Sarah was a sharp shooter a trait that I loved along  her many other positive traits...Her girly feelings are vividly portrayed as she pens down her inclination for two men she comes across..Jack Elliot the Cavalry officer enters her life giving her a taste of romance and love..But many times I felt that her early life hardship didn't let her be open to the relationship creating many unhappy moments through her married life..The pain of childbirth and further years of family life fills up journals, through all these Jack stands out as a man of strength and  endurance..Many a times their life gives a odd picture of frustration and irritability, yet they hang on moving parallel to each other not really merging up...Later as a sign to make up for a better life together Sarah moves to Tucson with children while her heart remains back at home @ ranch...

There are dramatic stroke, adventure that I loved to immerse ..The wonderful capture of Arizona will stay in heart for sometime.. Turner explores all character in depth , but the expanse of historic accounts is on a low note through the later part of the novel..The novel hold on to the reader's emotion well and creates a curiosity for the plot lying ahead..I loved the novel for Sarah and for showcasing a power of people to stand up for themselves during the difficult time in order to live and dream for better...

His time is running out of  time, retrieving the seal and key now seems bigger than a Himalayan task..

From the beginning of the novel, you get the feeling of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code.. Though it may not be fair to compare both yet you cannot shake off the similarity that they bring in....The readers can enjoy Krishna's key in a different plateau all together...Sanghi has done great research for this novel and that comes across beautifully without putting off the readers from sanskrit jargons...Sanghi has intertwined many known facts and unknown myths to take the novel ahead..Even when I could predict the next turn along the story, the book kept me interested with all the rich Indian myth...For a person foreign to Indian mythology like Mahabharata, and verses of Sanskrit, Sanghi has run a story parallel to give the readers a glimpse of who, what, and where....

I love it when Indian authors go ahead and take such storyline for their novel...The avatar of Krishna in Kaliyug is also painted well..Details of Vedic age and its relevance in modern era is done to perfection...Indian myth with a thriller suspense cocktail was a heady mix for me, yet all along you miss the otherwise awesome writing of Sanghi that you got to read in his earlier book Chanakya Chant....If Sanghi could do something about the loosening of the plots towards the closing of this book , we would have had a super blockbuster...My only problem with the novel was when the whole story that was headed to a higg five suddenly made its turn to Taj Mahal and somehow I felt the author lost the depth from then on....Still I wanted to read on to know what was in store...Though Saini would take on the first place among the favorite characters, both Radhika and Priya went well with me highlighting the brighter and greyer part of life....With all pretension gone the novel ends well...Through Saini, all about different aspects of Indian myth and history comes across well..Saini's love of history is quite contagious as is the dedication of Radhika towards her work...
This book is for anyone who loves historic fiction and Indian myth....
